Little adventures

December 4th, 2009

Since returning from our weekend in Utah I’ve been so swept up in holiday preparations that I’ve had very little time to think about…well, anything!

This is Jey’s first Christmas in America, and though he’s visited for Thanksgiving before, I want to make our first holiday season together especially memorable. So far that’s meant meals with my family, preparing traditional foods vegan-style, and getting our own Christmas tree.

We have been making some long-term plans as well, but I’ll save that for my next post. For now, I’m trying to focus on small adventures, like tomorrow’s DARPA Network Challenge. They’ll launch 10 giant, red balloons in random locations in the U.S. and it’s our job to use the internet to coordinate and submit those locations.

The Network Challenge Team followed me on Twitter (they’re @10_Red_Balloons), so I am throwing my lot in with them, as well as the MIT Red Balloon Challenge Team, and tomorrow morning I’ll head out to some high-elevation spots to scan the horizon with a pair of binoculars.

Tomorrow is meant to be slightly warmer than today’s 36F/2C, so if there does happen to be a balloon in the vicinity, I’m planning to bring its handler some hot cocoa.

Well, here I am, in all my cringe-inducing glory:

GOIV on 33

November 24th, 2009

Spent some time this morning being interviewed by a local news channel about the GOIV Fortune, our travel, and why I played in the first place. It’s kind of (okay, very) awkward to watch myself on video, but I hope I did right by the game and community, and spoke eloquently and with conviction.

The GoForth Adventure

November 23rd, 2009

Because I want to record our travels and experiences in as much detail as possible, I’ll break our story into several parts to make them easier to digest.

Have you reckon’d a thousand acres much? have you reckon’d the earth much?
Have you practis’d so long to learn to read?
Have you felt so proud to get at the meaning of poems?

Stop this day and night with me and you shall possess the origin of all poems,
You shall possess the good of the earth and sun, (there are millions of suns left,)
You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look through the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the spectres in books,
You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me,
You shall listen to all sides and filter them from your self.

Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself”, lines 30-37
